Virginia Beach, VA – Sheryl Lewis Killed, Teen Injured in Car Accident on Lankford Hwy at Rte 175

Written by: Virginia Beach Injury Law

Virginia Beach, VA (April 29, 2022) – A 66-year-old woman died and her 15-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash occurred on Route 13/Lankford Highway in the Eastern Shore area on Thursday afternoon, April 28.

Virginia State Police troopers responded to the incident around 12:30 p.m. Their preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of a 2007 Dodge Nitro, 61-year-old Veronica Dawn Milbourne, was traveling northbound on Route 13 when she failed to yield to the traffic signal at the intersection of Route 175, hitting a 2020 Chevrolet Impala. The driver of the Impala, identified as 66-year-old Sheryl B. Lewis, reportedly had the right of way.

Lewis suffered serious, life-threatening injuries in the crash, and medics attempted life-saving measures at the scene. She died before she could be transported to a hospital, however. Lewis’ 15-year-old passenger was also seriously injured and taken to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital by ambulance, but their current condition is unknown.

Authorities added that Milbourne sustained minor injuries and was transported to Riverside Shore Memorial as well.

Charges are forthcoming, VSP troopers stated, though their investigation remains active at this time.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Sheryl B. Lewis.

Vehicle Accident Deaths in Virginia

Virginia Beach, VA - Sheryl Lewis Killed, Teen Injured in Car Accident on Lankford Hwy at Rte 175

The latest data provided by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles shows that almost 1,000 deaths occurred on Virginia’s roadways in 2021 alone, an increase of about 15% compared to the previous year. In addition to these fatalities, statistics show that an average of 160 people suffered injuries daily throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia as a result of traffic accidents.

In many cases, driver negligence is the cause of these collisions. Unfortunately, drivers engaging in the following behaviors while operating their vehicles are largely responsible for the majority of serious auto accidents:

  • Speeding
  • Disobeying traffic control devices
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Using cell phones or engaging in other distracting behaviors

When drivers fail to give their full attention to the road ahead, it can have detrimental consequences for others. All too often, victims lose their lives due to the reckless actions of these drivers.

For these reasons and more, it is crucial that families affected by the loss of a loved one in a preventable car crash reach out to a wrongful death attorney in Virginia Beach as soon as possible. Families may be entitled to compensation to help alleviate the financial burdens they face moving forward.
