Hampton, VA (August 3, 2021) – Officers with the Hampton Police Department say that one person was killed in a crash, with another seriously injured, on Tuesday morning, August 3, around 4:30 a.m.
The Hampton Police Division released a photo of the car upside down and off the roadway. Officials said the crash happened at the intersection of LaSalle Avenue and Settlers Landing Road.
Upon arrival to the scene, police discovered a 50-year-old man and a 54-year-old man trapped in the car. Both were taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries via ambulance, and the 50-year-old, since identified as Lionel A. Toliver of Newport News, later died from his injuries. The other man remains in serious condition.
Police said that their initial investigation showed the driver lost control and hit a curb for unknown reasons. The vehicle then went into a dry ravine and flipped over. Officers did not say whether Toliver was the driver or the passenger in the car.
The accident closed the area for several hours while police investigated, though they haven’t released further details and say that their investigation is ongoing at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Lionel A. Toliver. Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of a full recovery.
