Newport News, VA (July 2, 2021) – An accident involving a propane tank and possibly another vehicle left one person dead and set off a serious hazmat situation in Newport News on Friday afternoon, July 2.
According to reports from officers with the Newport News Police Department, the incident happened on Harpersville Road. The road was shut down for several hours after 1:00 p.m. between Robinson Drive and Bruton Avenue. NNPD officers and rescue units dispatched by the Newport News Fire Department secured the propane tank and investigated the scene, talking to witnesses and working to address injuries.
Harpersville Road was closed for several hours but reopened shortly after 9:00 p.m. on Friday evening. The cause of the incident still remains under investigation by the Newport News Fire Marshal’s Office, and the name of the deceased victim has not been released at this time.
No other information was immediately available.
