Norfolk, VA (June 9, 2022) – According to officials, a commercial truck crash on westbound Interstate 264 on Thursday evening, June 9, wounded at least one person.

Virginia State Police troopers and Norfolk Police officers reported the incident, which occurred on the right side of the road and reportedly involved a semi-truck and a passenger automobile, at about 10:45 p.m. The accident occurred close to Exit 9, near Waterside Drive, and the area was closed for almost half an hour.

Medics and firefighting units were also sent to the scene to aid officers and evaluate the injured victims, although the total number of victims, as well as their present conditions, was not publicly released.

At this time, officials are still investigating what caused the collision.

Our sympathies go out to all who have been injured in this wreck. We wish them a full recovery.

Accidents in Virginia Involving Commercial Semi-Trucks

The United States Department of Transportation publishes yearly statistics, and the most recent estimates reveal that over 120,000 people are wounded in semi-truck accidents throughout the nation each year. Furthermore, about 4,300 persons were killed in these car accidents in 2017, a 56% increase from 2009.

A multitude of variables may contribute to truck accidents, including, but not limited to:

  • Drowsy driving: A considerable proportion of these incidents are caused by truck drivers who get behind the wheel when drowsy. Despite the fact that federal rules and standards are in place to prevent this, several organizations and their drivers continue to have compliance concerns.
  • Severe weather and adverse conditions: Truckers are far more likely to lose control of their cars in severe weather, including snow, rain, and fog.
  • Failure of equipment or dangerous cargo loading: A truck’s center of gravity might change due to poor cargo weight distribution, causing it to roll or tip over.

Due to their massive size and weight, semi-trucks regularly cause serious accidents. These incidents may result in traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), broken or fractured bones, back and neck injuries, head trauma, whiplash, and other ailments. Furthermore, hospital bills for victims and their families after a semi-truck accident may be exorbitant, ranging from painful, costly emergency procedures to months or years of long-term medical treatment and physical rehabilitation.
