Written by: Virginia Beach Injury Law

Norfolk, VA (May 4, 2022) – Authorities said that at least one person sustained injuries after a commercial truck accident took place on eastbound Interstate 264 Wednesday evening, May 4.

Virginia State Police troopers, working in conjunction with officers from the Norfolk Police Department, reported that one semi-truck and a passenger vehicle collided on the right side of the roadway around 11:00 p.m. The incident occurred near Exit 9 to Waterside Drive, and the area was closed for at least one hour following the initial collision.

Medics and fire rescue units were also called to the scene to evaluate victims, though the total number of victims was not provided.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision at this time.

Our thoughts are with the victims who were injured in this accident. We hope for their full recovery.

Commercial Truck Accidents in Virginia

Officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation release yearly data, which show that approximately 130,000 people sustain injuries in truck accidents throughout the country on an annual basis. Moreover, there were over 4,100 deaths caused by truck wrecks in 2017 alone, marking a nearly 55% increase in fatalities since 2009.

There are a number of common causes of these truck accidents, which include but are not limited to:

  1. Driver negligence: Truck drivers who get behind the wheel while drowsy or otherwise impaired contribute to a large portion of these incidents. Though federal regulations and rules are in place to prevent this from happening, some companies and their truckers continue to violate these rules.
  2. Inclement weather and poor conditions: It’s much more likely for truckers to lose control of their vehicles in bad weather, particularly in snow, rain, and fog.
  3. Equipment failure or improperly loaded cargo: The poor weight destruction of cargo can throw off a truck’s center of gravity, causing it to roll or tip over.

Unfortunately, when victims suffer injuries in commercial truck accidents, they pay a steep price. Due to the enormous size and weight of semi-trucks, they often caused major collisions.

The victims of these incidents may sustain catastrophic injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), broken or fractured bones, back and neck injuries, head trauma, whiplash, internal bleeding, organ damage, and more. From emergency surgeries to long-term medical attention lasting months or years, the hospital bills from an accident can be overwhelmingly costly for victims and their families.
