Accidents Involving Commercial Semi-Trucks in Virginia

The United States Department of Transportation releases annual data, with the latest figures showing that around 125,000 individuals are injured in semi-truck accidents that take place each year across the country. Furthermore, almost 4,200 people were killed in these vehicle accidents in 2017 alone, representing a roughly 55% increase from 2009.

These truck accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, including but not limited to:

  1. Drowsy driving: Truck drivers who get behind the wheel while sleepy are responsible for a significant number of these accidents. Despite the fact that federal regulations and standards are in place to prevent this, compliance issues among certain corporations and their drivers continue.
  2. Severe weather and inclement conditions: Truckers are significantly more prone to lose control of their vehicles in bad weather, especially in snow, rain, and fog.
  3. Failure of equipment or incorrect cargo loading: Poor cargo weight distribution can cause a truck’s center of gravity to shift, causing it to roll or tip over.

Unfortunately, semi-trucks frequently cause severe crashes due to their immense size and weight. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), broken or shattered bones, back and neck injuries, head trauma, whiplash, and more may occur as a result of these accidents. What’s more, hospital expenses following a semi-truck accident can be astronomically expensive for victims and their families, ranging from painful, costly emergency surgeries to months or years of long-term medical care and physical therapy.
