Norfolk, VA – Major Auto Accident on I-64 at Newtown Rd Shuts Down Highway, Causes Injuries

Written by: Virginia Beach Injury Law

Norfolk, VA (May 10, 2022) – At least two motorists were involved in a crash that took place early Sunday afternoon, May 8, and reportedly led to serious injuries.

According to police dispatch and Norfolk Police officers, they first received the call around 2:00 p.m. and responded to eastbound Interstate 64 at Newtown Road. News footage taken in the area showed several EMS trucks on the scene, though the total number of victims taken by ambulance to an area medical center was not made available.

NPD officers shut down all lanes on the highway and had drivers reroute to the I-264 Interchange while police worked to finish the on-scene portion of their investigation. The cause of the collision remains unclear, however, and additional details about the drivers involved in the accident were not provided by the NPD.

Our hearts go out to the people who were hurt in this wreck. We wish them a complete recovery.

Data on Major Auto Accidents in Virginia

Across the Commonwealth of Virginia, almost 1,000 people are killed in car accidents on an annual basis. Unfortunately, another 65,000 individuals are seriously injured as a result of these wrecks. And tragically, for months or even years following a car crash, victims may experience nagging physical pain, debilitating health difficulties, or emotional trauma and mental anguish. This is especially true in the case that accident victims suffer a traumatic brain injury, shattered bones or major fractures, or whiplash that leads to spinal damage.

Needless to say, victims of these major auto accidents in Virginia face significant constraints in the future. Compounding this already-stressful set of circumstances, the overwhelming majority of traffic crashes are caused by one of three preventable factors:

  • Excessive speed: Speed is the number one factor contributing to almost 50% of deadly accidents occurring in the Commonwealth.
  • Driver impairment: Close to 30% of traffic fatalities are owed to drivers who get behind the wheel while drunk or buzzed.
  • Reckless driving: Driver distractions, such as playing with the radio or texting behind the wheel, and other traffic violations tend to cause a large number of serious auto accidents in Virginia.

But no matter the cause of a traffic accident, the victims involved ultimately suffer devastating consequences. Those hurt in these crashes usually require medical care and continuing rehabilitation lasting weeks, months, or years. As a result, the costs of medical and therapy bills can quickly surge into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Luckily, if you’re the victim of a crash that’s happened through no fault of your own, you may have legal recourse. Those affected by the negligence of another motorist in a traffic accident must reach out to a car accident attorney in Norfolk as soon as they can.
