Norfolk, VA (February 23, 2022) – A tractor-trailer and three other vehicles collided in a crash in the westbound tunnel at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Wednesday morning, February 23.
Virginia State Police said the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. Medics responded as well and reported that one person sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to an area medical center, while other victims who suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene.
The cause of the crash has not been determined, but troopers are still investigating at this time. The westbound lanes of the highway reopened just before 11:00 a.m.
Our thoughts are with the victims who were injured in this accident. We hope for their full recovery.
Semi-Truck Accidents in Virginia
Each year, more than 800 people die in motor vehicle accidents across the state of Virginia. Another 65,000 suffer minor to major injuries. When people suffer serious injuries in auto accidents, they often face drastic limitations going forward.
Although motor vehicle accidents can happen for a variety of reasons, the majority fall under one of three causes. These causes include but are not limited to:
- Speeding: Speed is a factor in more than 35% of fatal accidents in Virginia.
- Alcohol use: More than 25% of deadly crashes statewide involve at least one drunk driver.
- Not using a seatbelt: Victims who do not wear seatbelts account for nearly 55% of crash fatalities.
You can take action to protect yourself on busy roads. However, there is no way to guarantee that others will act responsibly. As a result, tens of thousands of people sustain debilitating injuries that cause overwhelming pain and suffering.
To add to the struggles and frustration, many victims require long-term treatment. From hospitalization to therapy for their injuries, these costs number into the tens of thousands.
