Portsmouth, VA – Child Killed in London Oaks Apartment Fire at 2700 High St

Written by: Virginia Beach Injury Law

Portsmouth, VA (July 26, 2021) – Portsmouth Fire-Rescue authorities say that a child has died after a weekend apartment fire occurred in the Portsmouth area on Saturday afternoon, July 24.

Initial reports stated that firefighters were called to an apartment building, the London Oaks at the 2700 block of High Street, in the city just before 2:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found heavy flames consuming the first floor of the apartment and rising to the second floor. Officers with the Portsmouth Police Department and fire rescue units were also told a child was trapped on the second floor.

Firefighters then entered the second floor to initiate a search but had to retreat as the fire became too intense. Authorities say that the victim, a child around four years of age, was found later. It’s unclear if any other victims sustained injuries in the fire, though EMS was dispatched to the scene and appeared to treat at least one other victim.

The Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire and has not released further details at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the victims who were injured in this incident. We hope for their full recovery.

Burn Injuries & Fire Fatalities in Virginia

Each year, tens of thousands of Americans are negatively impacted by fires. Whether people are victimized in house fires, at their place of employment, or on another person’s property, these incidents can result in the loss of property and overwhelmingly painful injuries. People who are injured in fires often require immediate medical attention. In addition to severe burns, victims often sustain internal organ damages as a result of smoke inhalation. The impacts of fires and injuries are far-reaching. Many victims are left permanently scarred and have difficulties moving forward, both mentally and physically, after being harmed.
