Portsmouth, VA – Two Men Missing After Helicopter Crash Near Albemarle Sound

Written by: Virginia Beach Injury Law

Portsmouth, VA (July 20, 2021) – Coast Guard officials and other rescue units are searching for two people after a reported helicopter accident occurred in the area of the Albemarle Sound on Tuesday morning, July 20.

Just before 11:30 a.m., a Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter crew discovered debris in the water about nine miles north of the Alligator River Bridge. Just an hour beforehand, someone else recovered a backpack with personal belongings about four miles south, the Coast Guard said.

Two men were traveling in the Robinson R44 helicopter, which was lost shortly before it crashed. Friends of the two men told the Coast Guard they had lost communication with the helicopter around 6:40 p.m. on Monday evening.

The two men had planned to land at the Dare County Regional Airport after taking off from Mecklenburg Brunswick Regional Airport. It’s unclear how the accident was caused, and police have not released further details about the victims involved.

The investigation into the circumstances causing the accident is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the two victims and everyone else affected by this incident.

Virginia Aviation Accidents

Though aviation accidents are rare compared to car wrecks and other common types of collisions occurring on major roadways, deadly air incidents do happen throughout the commonwealth of Virginia. Although these accidents are often preventable and may be caused by pilot error or negligence on the part of a large commercial company, we are forced to witness the overwhelming consequences families are forced to endure. Hundreds of victims are rushed to area hospitals after their accidents where they have to undergo emergency medical treatment and spend days or even weeks in recovery. Victims often require therapy for their injuries, which is time-consuming and costly. Unfortunately, not every accident victim is able to recover, and several succumb to their injuries. Despite the low odds of being involved in an aviation accident, victims and the families affected by these occurrences suffer devastating consequences.

In many cases, the negligent or reckless actions of others are the cause of these types of accidents. Statistics show that more than 80% of accidents are caused by negligent parties who engage in reckless behaviors while operating their vehicles, from trucks to planes and cars to beyond. When people sustain fatal injuries in accidents caused by the actions of other motorists, their families should reach out to a wrongful death attorney in Virginia as soon as possible. Families may be entitled to compensation to help alleviate the financial burdens they face moving forward.
