Bicycle Accidents in Virginia

Virginia Beach, VA - Richard Canady Hospitalized After Bicycle Crash on Lynnhaven Pkwy at Holland Rd

Hundreds of people are killed in traffic-related incidents throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia yearly. Although these accidents are often preventable, the victims and their families affected by these incidents continue to suffer overwhelming consequences in the aftermath.

When it comes to accidents involving bicyclists, the numbers are even grimmer. According to the most recent report issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, nearly 700 motor vehicle wrecks involving bicyclists took place in the last year alone, resulting in more than 600 injuries and 13 fatalities. Nationwide, more than 1,000 bicyclists die annually, while almost 500,000 more victims suffer injuries.

It’s clear that bicyclists are some of the most vulnerable parties on our roads. Oftentimes, these victims are rushed to area hospitals after their accidents, where they may have to undergo emergency surgery or painful medical treatment that requires weeks in recovery. Moreover, these victims usually undergo months of time-consuming, costly physical therapy, not to mention years of treatment for severe emotional trauma.

Unfortunately, not every accident victim recovers. And when victims succumb to injuries sustained in an accident that’s occurred through no fault of their own, their mourning family members are left to pick up the pieces.

Thankfully, those affected by these incidents may have legal options to move forward. If you’ve suffered injuries in a bicycle accident or lost a loved one, you should reach out to an auto accident attorney in Virginia as soon as possible. You and your family may be entitled to compensation to help alleviate the financial burdens you face moving forward.
