Virginia Beach, VA (November 20, 2021) – Dispatchers say that two Prince Edward County school buses were involved in a crash that occurred last week, November 11.
According to the Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad and first responders, multiple students sustained injuries as a result of the collision, which happened on Island Ford Road (Route 649) at the intersection of South East Side Highway (Route 340). For unknown reasons, the school bus and a train collided in the area.
Rescuers screened around 73 students and the two bus drivers for injuries, and two of those victims were transported to the hospital for further treatment.
A spokesperson from the rescue squad said that school staff and inter-agency rescue personnel worked to rescue all students and ensure they received treatment.
The investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, and the events leading up to the collision remain unclear. Virginia State Police are working with Prince Edward officials to investigate the accident. It’s unclear if citations or charges are forthcoming.
Our thoughts are with the victims who were injured in this wreck. We hope for their full recovery.
